I called a mortgage company today and found out my hubby's credit is 523 and mine is 499. We are looking at buying in about a year and the guy recommended we going through a women in there office to clean up our credit. So we could get our scores(or atleast his up to 580)Should we use a credit repair company through a mortgage company?
No, you can 'repair' your credit yourself. There's nothing magical about it.
You can find more info here:

Hope that helps.Should we use a credit repair company through a mortgage company?
It is a scam. Real mortgage companies do not get involved with this.
You should get your scores again from someone reputable. The odds are good that they gave you false information in their efforts to rip you off.
NO NO NO is that clear?
using 'credit repair companies' does not repair ur credit !! u repair ur credit buy PAYING ur bills or settling them.
CRC usage put ur credit as having filed 'bankruptcy' for next 7yrs.
u will not find anything available except ripp off loan companies.
bad credit (for what ever reason) is not what u want to go house hunting. keep renting and learn to own ur money b4 becoming a slave to it.

Hi- I posted this answer for another quesion but thought it might help you, too (you can try to fix your credit yourself first) P.S. Many mortgage brokers are crooks. Make sure you get references.:
You can ';dispute'; the items that are negatively effecting your score. If the creditor company does not respond to your dispute within 30 days then the items will be completely removed from your report. This is the technique that those ';fix it'; comanies use to fix your credit.
It is free to dispute the items. Just go to this website: annualcreditreport.com. That is the site you use to get your yearly free credit report. After you review your report, simply dispute the negative items using the links they provide.
If the creditors do respond that the information is accurate, your next avenue is to call them directly and beg them to remove it. If the debt is already paid then come up with a good story. If it's not paid then tell them you'll pay it if they remove it. Try every angle you can can think of.
It doesn't hurt to try...be nice and beg! These collection agency can remove the negative items and your score will shoot up the next day. They just stop transmitting the information to the credit bureaus.
I got an item removed by doing this and my score literally shot up 60 points the next day. All it took was one phone call from the creditor to his collection agency and the item vanished the next day. All he said to them was ';bullseye this item for removal.'; So, give it a try! It did take me a while to find somebody who would listen to me but my score eventually shot up from the poor category to the excellent category.
Also, keep your credit card balances under 30% of the credit limit at all times, take out an additional credit card but don't charge anything on it (to show that you don't over extend yourself), ALWAYS pay your bills on time, and don't close out credit accounts- just keep them open and don't charge them up.
Money magazine had a great article a few years ago on fixing yout credit score. Try searching for it. That's where I got this idea.
Hope this helps!
Are they suggesting you let them consolidate your debt and make one monthly payment to them (they will in turn pay each of your debts for you each month)? This can be a bad idea...I've seen a lot of people do this, then the consolidation company doesn't make the payments on time, so you wind up getting more late payments and dropping the score even more.
I would definitely investigate a little more, even check the Better Business Bureau for complaints. It might be best to do the work on your own. Get a copy of your credit report from the mortgage company. Start by paying off any collections, and bringing any past due account current. Pay down high balances on credit cards, BUT DO NOT CLOSE THE ACCOUNTS...One thing that affects your score is the length of time that you have had accounts open...the longer, the better. Also, try making calls to negotiate lower rates on your credit cards. This will help pay them down faster.
Good luck! The higher you can get your score, the better interest rate you will be able to get on your new home. But definitely do your research before making your decision about having someone else clean up your credit.
I would walk away fast! They only one who can repair your credit is you. Pay your bills on time. Stay within your means.
Why pay someone what you can do? Also, what they do is unethical, but I will tell you what they do and you can decide if you want to do it yourself. They will pull your credit and dispute everything that has a negative mark on your report. If a company does not respond then the disputed item is taken off of you report. You can do the exact same thing. You have two choices.
Ethical, dispute anything that is wrong on your report.
Unethical, dispute everything that is a bad mark even when it is true.
